Penn State student taken to UPMC Altoona after crash

One person was taken to UPMC Altoona by Centre LifeLink after a car/bicycle crash at 11:18 a.m. Monday.

The injured bicyclist, a 22-year-old Penn State student, was taken to the hospital. The driver of a Kia Sorento was uninjured.

Police say the Kia Sorento was southbound on South Atherton Street and turned left onto Westerly Parkway. The bicyclist was traveling the opposite direction on South Atherton when the crash occurred.

Police say the bicyclist suffered head and body injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, adding it seems like the cyclist will make a good recovery.

The crash is under investigation, and the names of the bicyclist and driver were not released.

State College police Lt. Chris Fishel said the borough typically sees an increase in activity this time of year that could involve traffic crashes, pedestrian-related incidents or parking lot issues.

He advised that as the population base increases, individuals build in more time to safely complete tasks, urging them to be compassionate and courteous when dealing with other people.
