Property owners in State College need license for student housing

Owners of one- and two-family State College borough rental properties are advised to keep an eye on their mail for an important letter, according to a news release from the borough.

The mailing will detail a new law requiring an annual license for owners who operate a student home, the release said. A student home is “generally defined as any living arrangement within a one-family dwelling, one-family dwelling with an apartment or two-family dwelling with persons unrelated by blood, marriage or adoption who are undergraduate or graduate students.”

This also includes arrangements in which the landowner or family members of the owner are residents, the release said.

The borough visited the issue of student home licenses March 2. According to the release, the new law requires such student homes to annually renew a license and be inspected on the same cycle as their rental permit inspection.

Mailings are slated to begin Friday.
