Two Centre County students appointed to Air Force Academy, West Point

Two Centre County teens have been appointed to U.S. service academies as members of the class of 2019.

Rebecca Layng, a senior at Grace Prep Christian High School, and Gino Nicosia, a senior at Penns Valley Area High School, were nominated by Sen. Pat Toomey.

Layng will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., in the summer. She is a member of the Grace Prep varsity soccer team and Civil Air Patrol and participates in the Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Nicosia will attend the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y. He is the senior class president at Penns Valley Area and a member of the varsity soccer and track and field teams.

“Both Rebecca Layng and Gino Nicosia are accomplished students who care greatly about their community and their country,” Toomey said in an emailed statement. “The selection process for the service academies is very competitive and appointees must demonstrate the highest caliber of academic success, leadership skills, and character. Rebecca and Gino embody these qualities.”
