On Centre: Around Bellefonte | Herbie’s Hometown Loop organizers looking for volunteers

The organizers of the annual Herbie’s Hometown Loop are looking for volunteers.

Groups of four or more people can sign up to run water stations during the 4-mile run/walk, 10-mile run and 14-mile bike ride on the morning of Aug. 17. The groups are provided with the water, cups and table but asked to make the station fun with things like music, handing out Mardi Gras beads or anything else they’d like to do.

The top three stations that are voted the most fun will get a prize.

“We’re getting a few that are interested but we could still use some help,” Jennifer Herbstritt said of the progress so far.

The seventh annual event is designed to honor the memory of her brother Jeremy Herbstritt, who was killed while attending graduate school at Virginia Tech in 2007.

She said the day is designed to be all about him and to also raise funding for The Jeremy Herbstritt Foundation. The registration fee for one race is $20, or people can sign up for either run and the bike ride for $30. The runs start at 8:30 a.m. and the bike race begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of High and Spring streets.

“It’s just to kind of remember him,” Jennifer Herbstritt said, “to give him his day that he never had.”

Funds raised on race day will go toward building a track in Bellefonte.

The race day will be preceded by a pasta dinner and silent auction Aug. 16.

The dinner — at First Presbyterian Church of Bellefonte, 203 N. Spring St. — will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. The auction will begin with a preview from 4 to 6 p.m., open bidding from 6 to 7 p.m. and the winner announced at 7:30 p.m. It costs $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 10 and is free for children younger than 5.

Anyone interested in volunteering for a water station or the event in general can contact Jennifer Herbstritt at 574-1648 or by email at jennifer.herbstritt@gmail.com.

More information on the event and sign-up information for the races and the dinner can be found at herbieshometownloop.com.
