Bellefonte Area School District partners with Penn State for nursing interns

The Bellefonte Area school board approved a partnership between the district and the Penn State College of Nursing at a meeting Tuesday night.

Penn State reached out to the district earlier this year hoping to provide students enrolled in the nursing program with on-site experience, said Assistant Superintendent Michelle Saylor.

The idea was first presented to district nurse Karen Truesdale, who then brought the idea to the board’s attention.

Saylor said the district plans to bring in one student each semester to work with Truesdale and get clinical experience, starting next year.

“It will give them a feeling of what the school nurse profession is like,” Saylor said.

Truesdale manages the health rooms at Benner and Pleasant Gap elementary schools, and Bellefonte Area High School.

This is the first time the district has provided this opportunity for Penn State nursing students, Saylor said.

Bald Eagle and Tyrone area school districts provide similar programs, which Saylor said administration will emulate when drafting an internship plan.
