On Centre: Penns Valley | Green Drake exhibit highlights state’s natural beauty

Pennsylvania’s beauty, from its wildlife to its woods and streams, will be highlighted next month at an art exhibit opening in Millheim.

The show, titled “Wild and Scenic Pennsylvania,” features works from some of the state’s top wildlife artists, according to Dana Morrison, assistant manager at the Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center.

Both original paintings and limited edition prints celebrating forests, streams and wildlife will be on display, Morrison said.

The show opens with a reception from 6 to 9:30 p.m. May 3 at the gallery on West Main Street. The event, which is free to attend, will also feature live music and refreshments.

Morrison said the show will remain at the gallery through June 30 and will be featured in the Millheim Mayfly Festival set for June 7 and 8.

Not to be outdone, some budding Penns Valley artists will have some of their own masterpieces displayed next weekend at a local gallery.

Penns Valley school district officials said artwork by several elementary students was picked to be part of an event at the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania in Lemont.

“These students are being recognized at this event because they have demonstrated a special aptitude and love of art,” Penns Valley officials said on the district’s website.

The students will be recognized during a special reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Art Alliance building on Pike Street. Students and their parents will also have a chance to meet and talk with local artists.

According to the alliance website, the group strives to build bridges between teachers and art students of all ages, as well as between artists and the public.

The students’ work will be on display through Sunday. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday.
