On Centre: Penns Valley | Millheim welcomes summer with music, art festival

Music and art are set to flood downtown Millheim starting June 7 for the annual Millheim Mayfly Festival.

Organizers say the event helps kick off summer with music, art, children’s activities, educational programs and specials by merchants and local organizations.

The two-day festival will get underway around 6 p.m. June 7 with music on Main Street and continuing into the night at venues around town, including the Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center and IngleBean Coffee House.

On June 8, craft and food vendors will descend on downtown, gathering on Main Street and in Fountain Park. There will be live street music throughout the late morning and afternoon on Main Street, with a long list of local favorites involved.

But local musicians won’t be the only artists performing their craft downtown. The Green Drake, in connection with the festival, is holding its first Plein Air Paint-Out.

The event, open to the first 25 artists to register, will give Mayfly festivalgoers a chance to check out works of art as they are being made.

According to organizers, 90 percent of participating artists’ work must be done in the field over a three-day period.

On Thursday and Friday, artists may work within a 6-mile radius of downtown Millheim, including “the farmland and mountains of eastern Penns Valley and parts of Brush Valley, many parts of Penns Creek including Poe Valley and Poe Paddy state parks, and several picturesque small towns including Millheim itself,” organizers wrote on the gallery’s website.

But on Saturday, artists must work in Millheim, or within a 2-mile radius, so festival attendees can observe them at work.

There also will be plenty of children’s activities during the Mayfly Festival, including a beach volleyball tournament at the Millheim pool and a mayfly costume craft station followed by a costume contest at the IngleBean Coffee House.

A full list of activities and schedule is available Millheimpa.com or on the festival’s Facebook page.
