Penns Valley

On Centre: Penns Valley | Elementary students get a glimpse of Ghana

Some Penns Valley elementary school students recently had the chance to reach out — way out — to some fellow students half a world away.

Students from three elementary schools in the district spent time this year learning about Ghana and the art and culture of the African country, according to the district’s website.

And as part of the unit, local students were able to participate in a special cultural exchange through dance and art, district officials said.

Penns Valley students learned a traditional Ghanaian dance during the school year, and in exchange, wrote guides meant to teach African students how to do the “Chicken Dance.”

They also made friendship bracelets for their newfound and unlikely friends who live more than 5,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in the West African country.

The bracelets will be sent to Ghana and distributed to students there as part of the cultural exchange, according to district officials.

The lesson for Penns Valley students culminated recently with an assembly hosted by art teacher Stephanie Ripka and instructional media specialist Kristen Albright.

During the assembly, which highlighted the connections between the United States and Ghana, the teachers unveiled a mural made of the drawings the students created focusing on the importance of conserving water.

Graduation ceremony to stream live

Not everyone can make it in person to watch their favorite Penns Valley high school senior don the cap and gown at the district’s graduation ceremony Friday.

But district officials might have the solution.

Penns Valley will stream the ceremony live at www.ustream.tv/channel/penns-valley. It will also be recorded and will be available for replay at the same site.

The ceremony is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday at the high school football field.

District officials said 92 seniors will walk across the stage, grab their diplomas and start exciting new chapters.

The class valedictorian, Kayla Snyder, David Leedy or Kyle Houser, depending on final grades, will give the commencement speech.
