Penns Valley

On Centre: Penns Valley | Show brings art from afar

From Ghana to ... Penns Valley?

It may not be such an unusual journey. Artists from the African country and from other locations around the world will be in Millheim this week to display their work.

The “Arts Across the Ocean” show is set to open Friday at the Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center.

The latest in the gallery’s monthly exhibit series will not only give area residents a chance to experience art from far-away places, but to meet the artists themselves.

The show features work from at least five artists and music from Eric Ian Farming Friday evening.

An opening reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday. The show will remain at the gallery, located on West Main Street in Millheim, until the end of October.

It’s not the only recent contact between Penns Valley and Ghana.

Some Penns Valley elementary school students had the chance to last year to spend time learning about the country and culture of the West African country.

Penns Valley students learned a traditional Ghanaian dance during the school year, and in exchange, wrote guides meant to teach African students how to do the “Chicken Dance.”

They also made friendship bracelets for their newfound and unlikely friends who live more than 5,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

The bracelets will be sent to Ghana and distributed to students there as part of the cultural exchange, according to district officials.
