Traffic backed up on U.S. Route 322 when a container filled with herbicide fell from a truck and spilled along the side of the road Monday evening.

An eastbound stretch of the road near its intersection with state Route 144 was down to one lane for a time after the accident around 4:15 p.m. while emergency responders and a hazardous materials team were there.

Harry Hockenberry, Centre Hall fire chief, said the spill was smaller than initially feared and was quickly contained by responders.

“We thought at first quite a bit got out, but it wasn’t much at all,” he said. “They started damming it as soon as it fell off. That helped.”

Hockenberry said the vehicle hauling the chemical was traveling on Route 144 and was attempting to turn onto Route 322 when the plastic container fell.

None of the material was believed to have traveled to the nearby stream, Potter Run.
