The Memorial Field turf project is expected to be completed by Wednesday, and the new bleachers are still expected to be occupied when State High varsity football plays its first home game Sept. 6.
Director of Physical Plant Ed Poprik said the installation is going great, and the turf quality is fantastic.
The roughly $3 million project also includes a collection system under the field to route water to the sinkhole, a new set of bleachers on the west side of the field and a new temporary bleacher on the east side.
The above-average rainfall through the summer has caused some delays in the construction process and trouble for the workers. Poprik said the field will be ready when the Little Lions open against Central Mountain High School.
But Poprik said the final completion won’t be until after the season starts. He said there will be a full update on the progress of the construction at the school board’s next meeting Monday.
In addition, work on the Fraser Street sidewalk will replace the concrete with brick, similar to the centennial walkway downtown, and the district will run a “buy-a-brick” campaign, selling engraved bricks to raise funds.
