Former Penn State athlete sentenced to jail

A former Penn State Hazleton volleyball player was sentenced to three days in jail Friday after a one-day jury trial.

According to a Centre County District Attorney news release, Tiara Hernandez, 22, was found guilty on Oct. 17 of one misdemeanor count of simple assault. The jury determined she was not guilty of burglary and criminal trespassing.

Charges stemmed from a June incident in which Hernandez was accused of chasing a woman into her residence and punching her several times in a dispute over a man, the release said. She fled the scene, but was arrested eight days later by Patton Township police.

Hernandez was sentenced by Centre County Judge Pamela Ruest and will serve the three days at the Centre County Correctional Facility, the release said.
