Rockview officer sentenced for sex assault on inmate

A suspended corrections officer at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview who pleaded guilty in March to sexually assaulting an inmate is now returning to a prison on the Benner Pike, but in a different capacity.

Marlin Freeman, 55, of Ramey, was sentenced Thursday to serve 11 and a half months to 23 and a half months in the Centre County Correctional Facility.

State police at Rockview said the Clearfield County man forced an inmate to perform sex acts in the state prison chapel between September 2009 and April 2012.

“His criminal behavior is no reflection on the thousands of other prison guards that risk their lives every day doing a tough and thankless job,” Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said in a statement.

Department of Corrections officials previously said Freeman was suspended without pay Nov. 16, and said they would make a decision on his employment status after the sentencing. Officials could not provide an update Thurday evening.

State corrections officials said at the time of Freeman’s arrest in January that no other inmates had come forward with allegations.

Freeman’s defense attorney, Tami Fees, said could not immediately be reached for comment.
