Police warn of new phone scam

State College police are warning of a rash of phone scams targeting local residents in recent weeks.

Police said an unidentified caller will claim the resident’s computer is infected with a virus and needs to be repaired. The caller claims to work for a computer company, such as Microsoft, and tells the victim to enter a credit card number on a website to pay for the repairs.

Residents should never give out personal information like Social Security or credit card numbers over the phone, police said.

Anyone with additional information can contact State College police at 234-7150 or submit an anonymous tip online.
