State College police: Man attempts to evade officer, crashes into Chipotle Mexican Grill

DUI charges filed after man crashes into Chipotle

A Florida man was charged after State College police said he was driving under the influence of alcohol, turned the wrong way onto Beaver Avenue and tried to evade police before crashing into the back of a restaurant.

Police said Manuel Barrantes made the left turn onto East Beaver Avenue from South Garner Street, just before midnight Saturday. When police tried to stop him he continued west, made a right turn onto Hiester Street and a left turn onto Calder Way at a high rate of speed. He then turned left onto Wilson Alley before crashing into the back of the Chipotle Mexican Grill, police said.

The car was badly damaged, but there are no reports of damage to the building.

Barrantes was charged with a felony count of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, a misdemeanor count of DUI and summary offenses of driving without a license and driving the wrong way.

Police said Barrantes failed a field sobriety test, and they are awaiting the results of a blood test.

He remains in Centre Couty Correctional Facility after being unable to post $10,000 bail, according to court documents. He was arraigned Sunday by District Judge Thomas Jordan and a preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 21.
