Conviction upheld in animal cruelty case against Milesburg man

A Milesburg man convicted of animal cruelty in October 2013 lost his appeal to the Pennsylvania Superior Court on Monday, according to a press release from the Centre County District Attorney’s Office.

Thomas Shawley, 57, was sentenced in December to one to three years in jail plus a year and nine months probation.

The charges stemmed from an investigation of Shawley’s farm by the state Department of Agriculture and SPCA that found his herd of beef cattle had suffered from malnutrition and that Shawley did not properly dispose of dead animals at the farm, the release stated.

Shawley appealed the sentence, claiming it was excessive, and was allowed to remain free on bail until the matter was ruled on, according to the release.
