State College police investigate arson after apartment fire

An early morning fire has been ruled an act of arson and is under investigation by State College police.

The department received a 911 call around 4:10 a.m. Wednesday reporting smoke coming from the basement of 668 East Prospect Ave.

A fire was discovered in the basement utility room of that address, police said. Although the building was engulfed in smoke by that time, all occupants were evacuated and no injuries were reported.

The Alpha Fire Department was able to put out the fire before it spread to other apartments, police said.

According to police, an accelerant had been used to set cleaning supplies in the utility room on fire.
