Charges stemming from a fatal motorcycle accident last year have landed a Schuylkill County man in the Centre County Correctional Facility.

Charles Oliver II, 52, of Andreas, is accused of felony vehicular homicide while driving under the influence in relation to the death of Karen Moore, 50, of Port Matilda. The accident occurred the afternoon of July 2 on state Route 504 in Union Township.

Oliver and Moore were riding a motorcycle and traveling eastbound on the road when Oliver was unable to navigate a curve in the road, police said. They ran off the road onto the gravel berm and both were ejected from the bike and struck a metal guardrail, police said. Neither was wearing a helmet, police said.

Moore was declared dead at the scene.

Oliver was seriously injured in the accident and flown to a trauma center in Altoona. Alcohol was thought tho have been a factor in the crash, and two empty liquor bottles were found in Moore’s backpack, police said. A blood sample taken by hospital personnel found Oliver’s blood-alcohol level to be .15, according to court documents.

Oliver had a driver’s license but was not licensed to drive a motorcycle and is charged with causing an accident involving death while not properly licensed and summary traffic offenses including reckless driving.

Oliver was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Kelley Gillette-Walker and is held on $50,000 cash bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 18.
