Bellefonte man arrested on suspicion of DUI after police chase, crash

A Bellefonte man was arrested on numerous charges Friday night after fleeing from police during an attempted traffic stop, police said.

State police at Rockview said police attempted to stop William DeHaas, 34, for a traffic violation on state Route 150 near the Swartz Hollow Road intersection in Howard Township, when DeHaas refused to stop and “fled at a high rate of speed.”

DeHaas then led police on a short pursuit until he lost control of the vehicle and crashed at the intersection of Schencks Grove Road and Hunters Run Road, police said.

DeHaas and the passenger, a 38-year-old woman from Mill Hall, then fled on foot, police said.

Police said several law enforcement officials responded and located DeHaas at a home nearby, and took him into custody for fleeing and eluding police, and under suspicion of driving under the influence.

Neither the driver nor passenger was injured during the crash.

DeHaas was remanded to the Centre County jail.
