A woman is in jail, accused of attacking a man with a sword Wednesday night.

State police at Rockview were called to a Potter Township home at about 9:20 p.m., where troopers found a man with a laceration on the side of his head, police said.

The man told police he and Anne Vander-Velden, 55, were having an argument when she hit him in the head with her purse, according to court documents. He reported that he pushed her and that she grabbed a sword and struck him in the head with it, according to police.

The sword weighs 10-15 pounds and is 28 inches long, police said. The man required nine stitches.

Police said Vander-Velden refused to cooperate when they tried to arrest her and had to physically take her into custody.

Vander-Velden was arraigned Thursday morning before District Judge Carmine Prestia and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and harassment. She is in Centre County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
