SCI Houtzdale continues to be locked down as an investigation into an incident that left several corrections officers injured last week continues.

All of the officers have since been released from the hospital, state Department of Corrections spokesperson Susan Bensinger said. A search of the facility initiated last week has been completed, and corrections officials are working with state police in investigating the assault of the corrections officers and appropriate charges will be filed at its conclusion, she added.

The cause of the fight between two inmates that sparked the incident is also under investigation, Bensinger said.

The fight began in the prison yard at about 2:30 p.m. on April 28 and caused a larger disturbance where a number of inmates refused to leave the yard. Five corrections officers were injured when they intervened. Each required treatment at an outside hospital and one was flown by helicopter. Bensinger declined to comment on the types of injuries due to privacy concerns.

The incident was resolved later that evening when the inmates were returned to their cells.

About 2,500 male inmates are held at the facility, which is staffed by 500 corrections officers and other personnel.
