Police reiterate naked truth about online interaction

Video chat service Skype got a State College resident in a peculiar situation earlier this week.

Police said a 26-year-old international student reported Monday that a woman thought to be from Singapore tried to extort $1,000 from him in exchange for not posting naked photos and video of the man online.

The man told police he started a conversation with the woman on Facebook and then switched to Skype, when the man undressed for the camera. The woman then told the man she would post the images on the Internet and send them to his parents if he did not send her the cash via Western Union.

Police said the man then ended the session and called them.

State College police Lt. Keith Robb said there was little the department could do because the incident involved someone living abroad and was out of their jurisdiction, adding that people should be careful about who they interact with online and what they do on social media.
