A State College man charged with simple assault and harassment waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday morning.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Matthew Gilbert, 21, got in a verbal altercation that turned physical on Dec. 4 with a woman at his apartment on Locust Lane.
Gilbert and the woman apparently became embroiled in the verbal altercation after she discovered text messages on his phone.
According to the affidavit, the victim attempted to leave Gilbert’s residence and this is when he “grabbed her arms to prevent her from leaving.” Court documents indicate the woman slapped Gilbert “in an attempt to get him to let her go.”
The affidavit says Gilbert then “threw her on the bed and punched her in the stomach and left arm.”
When the victim came to the Penn State police station, court documents say that there were “visible signs of bruising on her left arm” and that she “complained of pain.”
