A former State College Area High School teacher was sentenced to two-to-four years in state prison followed by four years of probation.
According to a Centre County District Attorney’s Office release, Wesley Amy, 28, of Bellefonte, was sentenced Friday after being convicted in October of several counts of criminal attempt related to the sexual abuse and corruption of minors.
Amy taught at State High for just seven months.
According to court documents, Amy offered several female students higher grades in return for nude pictures. He was arrested after one of the targeted students told a friend who then told a parent.
Judge Jonathan Grine deemed Amy a “sexually violent predator” during the sentencing Friday after hearing expert testimony from the Sexual Offenders Assessment Board, the District Attorney’s Office said. That designation will require Amy to register under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act for the remainder of his life.
“Students have a right to be safe from predatory behavior in schools,” District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller said in the release. “This was a serious breach of the trust parents put in teachers and we are relieved his behavior did not advance farther and that the persons involved notified authorities when they did.”
