World Campus leader leaving Penn State for UCLA

The executive director of Penn State’s World Campus is leaving for a similar position at UCLA.

Wayne Smutz will be the dean of Continuing Education and Extension at the California university effective Oct. 15.

Smutz has been at Penn State for more than three decades, as he has worked in developing for-credit and noncredit educational programs, marketing and online learning.

Craig Weidemann, the vice president for outreach at Penn State, said Smutz helped grow the World Campus.

Penn State is spending $20 million to grow the World Campus from 12,000 students to 45,000 over the next decade. Weidemann has appointed a team to take over managing that initiative, the university said in a news release.
