Watching history

It was amazing to be in Beaver Stadium in 1998 and 2001 for Coach Joe Paterno's 300th and 324th victories.

You remember them well, I'm sure.

You'll have a chance Saturday to see something that fans will never see again in college football: A coach going for his 400th win.

It won't happen. Nobody will stay with a program like Paterno, who took over as head coach in 1966.

He is one of a kind, and the buzz around this game shows that Penn State fans understand and appreciate the history they might see. A national TV audience will be able to see the 3:30 game against Northwestern.

We've been planning a special Paterno 400 Win web site to debut after the big victory. Look for it at starting Saturday night if 400 happens. If not, it will debut another Saturday night.

It includes some content through the years and a special 110-photo gallery that features the coach through his career.

We've also been planning a special section to run Wednesday after the win. Fans can congratulate Paterno in that section. Here are the details. There will be details soon how to order that section and Sunday's paper no matter where you live.

Of course look for full coverage of the game in Sunday's paper, including special presentation if it's the coach's 400th win.

Best wishes to Coach Paterno and the Nittany Lions as they attempt to make history.
