Severe thunderstorm brings down trees in Centre County, brief closure of U.S. Route 322
A severe thunderstorm that rolled through the region Thursday afternoon briefly closed a portion of U.S. Route 322 in Centre County as emergency responders were dispatched to reports of downed trees.
Route 322 was closed in both directions from between the Old Fort to PA 144/Potters Mills exits due to a tree down across the roadway, according to the state Department of Transportation. The orange detour was in place, and PennDOT’s traffic map showed moderate and heavy traffic in the area following the opening at about 3 p.m.
The State College Area School District notified parents of possible bus delays after the closure.
State Route 45 was also “full of trees in the roadway,” the Centre County Emergency Alerts and Information Facebook page cautioned at about 2:20 p.m., with first responders and PennDOT working to clear the roadways. PennDOT’s traffic map shows moderate and heavy traffic along Route 45.
First responders were also called to reports of trees on wires in Benner and Walker townships.
A severe thunderstorm watch will remain until 9 p.m. for Centre County, according to the National Weather Service at State College.
