Our View | Take your support for State College Spikes out to the ballgame

The State College Spikes are going where no local minor league team has gone before: to the New York-Penn League championship series.

Sunday night’s 6-0 win over the Jamestown Jammers sent State College to the finals against Tri-City.

The best-of-three series starts Tuesday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, N.Y., and moves to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday. If necessary, Game 3 would be Thursday in State College.

State College’s fine manager, Oliver Marmol, watched his team win two in a row against the Jammers after dropping the series opener.

“You know if you win you keep going, you lose and you go home,” Marmol told the CDT’s Aaron Carter after the St. Louis Cardinals’ single-A affiliate advanced over the Pittsburgh Pirates farm club.

The Tri-City ValleyCats reached the finals with a two-game sweep of Aberdeen. The ValleyCats are affiliated with the Houston Astros.

We like the attitude of Spikes right fielder Jimmy Bosco, whose response to Sunday’s win was: “OK, now what?”

We wish the Spikes luck and hope they capture that New York-Penn League trophy.

We urge local fans to consider heading out to Lubrano Park to cheer this exciting team to a championship this week.
