William Levinson states in his Aug. 2 letter that because the business and industry faction of the Penn State board of trustees appoints its own members they are accountable to nobody. Historically these business and industry trustees were elected by delegates from Pennsylvania industrial and engineering associations, much as the agricultural trustees are elected by delegates from county agricultural associations.
During president Graham Spanier’s tenure, the power to elect business and industry trustees was transferred to the board of trustees. As proposals for reform of the board of trustees are debated, consideration should perhaps be given to re-establishing a role for the university’s industrial and engineering constituencies in the election of these trustees.
