Our View | Thumbs for Saturday

Thumbs up: To the very generous anonymous donor who gave $1 million to fund the Philip G. Keeney food science department head excellence fund at Penn State. It’s a fitting tribute to the Berkey Creamery’s Keeney Beany namesake, whose impact on the program was legendary.

Thumbs down: To the game of chicken the NCAA appears to have played in imposing unprecedented sanctions on Penn State in response to the Jerry Sandusky scandal and for “banking” on the university’s embarrassment to force acceptance of the consent decree.

Thumbs up: To the quick response of State High staff and the Penn State hazmat team, who cleared and decontaminated a chemistry classroom Wednesday after a mercury thermometer fell to the floor and broke. It reminds us of the many crucial roles our first-responders fill.
