I support the intention of recent editorials urging the CDT community to consider using University Park Airport.
Ease of getting to the airport and short security lines are indeed valuable benefits. But the higher airfare costs are hard to justify when more than one or two people are flying.
For families on a budget, flying out of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington or other East Coast cities are the only affordable options, especially at peak times connected to the Penn State calendar. I typically save $200-600 per ticket when my family flies cross-country or internationally. That more than offsets the cost and inconvenience of driving to those airports.
Airlines will need to offer more price incentives to fly out of UPA if the flying habits of most families I know are to change.
