Lovely essay by Bill Mahon the other day: “State College is in danger of losing its charm, character.” But the column is about 75 years too late.
The late Bill Welch used to tell stories about growing up in State College, including one about the Sundays he sat on his grandmother’s porch in a house on Hiester Street and watched equestrians from Penn State ride to and from the university’s stables in Calder Alley.
The house and the stables are long gone, as are many other charming buildings and businesses. You know we’ve hit the bottom when people are upset because a bar is changing owners. Charming.
