Letter to the editor | Beware of high water

As a meteorologist, I was disappointed to see the photo in the CDT on Friday (“Rain pummels region”) of a State College Public Works truck driving through the flood on Atherton Street. That image was a perfect example of what not to do when you see a flooded road.

More people die in floods than any other severe weather hazard, and according to the National Weather Service, “most flood-related deaths and injuries could be avoided if people who come upon areas covered with water followed this simple advice: Turn around, don’t drown.”

It only takes 2 feet of water to carry a vehicle, including SUVs and pickups. For more information on public flood safety, please go to www.tadd.weather.gov.
