The hiring of Eric Barron as the next president of Penn State is a wonderfully positive development.
Barron’s intellectual drive, foresight and creativity were catalysts for many innovative developments during his tenure here as director of Penn State’s Earth System Science Center and, subsequently, as dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
As everyone who participated in meetings and workshops organized by Barron during those years can attest, he has a unique ability to bring together individuals from diverse areas of expertise to achieve transformative advances.
Barron is a true visionary who will, I believe, set Penn State on a trajectory that will rapidly and substantively elevate its national and international stature.

The late professor Stephen Schneider, a world-renowned climate scientist at Stanford University, told me during a workshop many years ago that the greatest achievement of a former dean at Penn State had been the hiring of Eric Barron.
I would venture the same claim can now be made by the board of trustees.
