Letter to the editor | Working for the future

I was happy to read the recent column by Matt Schuyler, who’s seeking an alumni seat on the board of trustees.

The column was refreshing and timely. Why timely?

Incoming Penn State President Eric Barron will arrive soon to lead our great university forward. And on Saturday, football coach James Franklin will lead his team onto the Beaver Stadium grass for the first time before thousands of eager fans.

Since November 2011, we’ve been told we have to look backward — that moving forward was not yet possible. Try telling that to Barron, to Franklin, or to the classes of freshmen who keep rolling onto campus year after year after year.

They are working now for a better future.

Recently, I met Schuyler and the two other candidates endorsed by Upward State, Dan Cocco and Julie McHugh.

They talked with fellow alumni for 90 minutes at the State College Municipal Building last week, and I came away from that discussion energized and excited about the prospect of these outstanding alumni working side by side with Barron to chart a positive course for Penn State’s future.

They care about the things that matter most to students, such as keeping tuition affordable and attracting the very best faculty.

I will vote for the Upward State team, and encourage other alumni to do the same.
