Letter to the editor | A champion for health care

Pennsylvania is not a state that turns its back on its friends and neighbors in their time of need.

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz deserves to be our next governor because she understands this. I know Schwartz is the right choice because I was raised in central Pennsylvania — in a community that cares.

After graduating from State High in 2011, I started volunteering at Centre Volunteers in Medicine. Although CVIM is fantastic, one charity alone cannot handle all of Centre County’s low-income residents.

Schwartz has a history of standing up for these folks. She supports Medicaid expansion, which can put health care within reach of more than 500,000 more Pennsylvanians. She led the charge to reform the Medicare physician payment system to protect seniors’ access to their doctors and to reduce Medicare costs.

Schwartz also founded the the Congressional Health Care Innovation Task Force and the Congressional Academic Medicine Caucus.

I am now a proud Penn Stater and participate in Thon every year. Many of the pediatric cancer patients we dance for rely on the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Schwartz worked tirelessly with House and Senate Republicans to make this dream of coverage for low-income children (and children with pre-existing conditions) a reality.

Schwartz doesn’t just have a platform; she has decades of legislative experience. Read about the bills she has co-sponsored, the committees and caucuses she’s served on and the causes she has championed. Her record speaks for itself.

Vote for Rep. Allyson Schwartz on May 20.
