In his latest opinion piece, Leonard Pitts Jr. chastises the Christian church for slowness in some of its actions (“Christianity last to get it right,” CDT, Sunday).
In order to enforce his point, he quotes Scripture, misinterpreting it. That Scripture is found in Matthew 11:28 — “Come unto me all you who are weary and burdened.”
He intends that to apply to those with earthly needs.
Clearly, that is not the meaning. It is an invitation for the spiritually “weary and burdened” to become Christians. So say the commentaries.
Such a serious misapplication of God’s word disqualifies anyone from telling the church how to fulfill its mission.
