Letter to the editor | ‘Not one more’ gun death

I add a resounding “Yes” to the plea of Chris Martinez’s father, who said about his son’s death in the latest mass shooting in Santa Barbara: “Not one more!”

Not one more death by guns that are too easy to get, too uncontrolled. It is common knowledge that the gun lobby has our politicians in their pockets.

No one is talking about the fact that even the conservative idol on the Supreme Court, Justice Antonin Scalia, wrote in the Heller case that while the Constitution’s Second Amendment guarantees the right to bear arms, those rights are not absolute and there may be reasonable controls placed on gun purchases and ownership.

There is no legal barrier to gun controls, just the fear and intimidation raised by the National Rifle Association.

Why will our politicians not listen to the majority of the population who want greater controls, instead of listening to the gun lobby? Why? Why are the rights of gun owners and the arms industry placed above the right to live in a safe world?

Common-sense gun controls have ended mass murders in Australia. We could do it, too. We must listen to Martinez: Not one more! Rep. Thompson: Not one more!
