I was relieved to read professor Wadhia’s thoughtful and poignant opinion piece, “ Raids, rights and the rule of law” (CDT, June 24). It is important for a community to send a message other than fear and the threat of punishment, and Wadhia’s was one of the first such messages I’ve heard.
I still fail to understand why there is such anger, in a nation of immigrants, surrounding the issue of immigration, and why this anger leads to an obsession with exclusion and punishment. Our economy is global and fluid, and so are its people. You can’t have one without the other, and we are better off working together from that understanding than we are chasing service employees in and out of detention centers.
I hope that as a community going forward, we are counted among those who approach the issue in the spirit of inclusion, partnership and empathy.
