Letter to the editor: Lobbying against Rep. Thompson

According to Opensecrets.org, a nonpartisan research group, during his six years as our representative in the 5th District, Glenn Thompson has received more political contributions from the oil and gas industry (more than $248,000) than from any other industry, including health, automotive and insurance.

It is not surprising, then, that Thompson is a climate-science denier. He prefers to ignore the findings of 97 percent of scientists who find that human beings, through the burning of fossil fuels and other activities, are responsible for significant increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide, which in turn is causing the climate to change.

Climate change, in the form of droughts, powerful hurricanes such as Sandy and Katrina, wildfires and many other effects, is already influencing our lives.

Climate scientists predict these effects and others, including steadily rising temperatures, will worsen and have devastating effects on the lives of our descendants for generations to come if not seriously addressed now.

Instead of being re-elected, Thompson should be held accountable for his reckless “representation” that is squandering the future of our children.

Thompson voted for H.R. 910, the Energy Tax Prevention Act, which, if passed, would have prevented the Environmental Protection Agency from addressing climate change by regulating carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

As expected, the fossil-fuel industry lobbied strongly for the passage of this dangerous bill.

Please take responsible action Nov. 4 by voting against Thompson in favor of Kerith Strano Taylor, who has pledged to seriously address the threat of climate change.
