Mark Guiltinan’s letter (CDT, Aug. 6) on the intersection of North Atherton and Park Avenue is on the right track.
Much of the traffic there is local and not through. The single step of extending University Drive North to a half-interchange with the I-99 bypass could solve a majority of the problem. After all, much of the traffic is coming to the parking lots around the stadium and Bryce Jordan Center as well as the central campus.
The university fought this when the bypass was constructed, but the Park Avenue interchange is too far out for traffic coming from the north. Only a half-interchange is needed because traffic coming from the east or south would still logically use the Park Avenue exchange. A University Drive interchange would be relatively noninvasive to build as well.
Nobody wants the traffic, but it is here and is not going away.
