In a recent letter, Phil Edmunds (CDT, 10/17) made the mistake of comparing the 3.3 percent salary increase for SCASD teachers to past inflation, rather than what economists project for future inflation.
The long-term inflation projection for the U.S. economy from 2016 forward ranges between 2 and 2.5 percent, meaning the contract allows for teacher salaries to keep up with the cost of living and provides a modest increase above inflation of roughly 1 percent per year.
Given the huge value an educated population brings to our area and our nation, that reasonable increase hardly seems infuriating or unjustifiable.
