The reported controversy over the Penns Valley Area School District’s assignment to learn about the development of Islam, its beliefs and Islam’s relationship to Judaism and Christianity is disheartening.
In a world where radical followers of Islam are in the headlines daily, understanding the true foundations of Islam is vitally important.
Maintaining ignorance of who some Penns Valley parents apparently consider their enemy is certainly misguided, if not actually dangerous. Understanding the very complex history of the world’s religions should certainly be part of a modern curriculum.
I was glad to hear of the Penns Valley teacher’s assignment. There is no evidence that the course promotes any particular religion, just the expectation that young students should be familiar with the history of their development.
That is a requirement we should all support.
