Penn State men’s swimmer Shane Ryan set a NCAA record and led the Big Ten’s 400 freestyle relay team to victory in the final day of the Big Ten-USA Challenge on Sunday.
In the 100 backstroke, Ryan finished with a time of 45.75 seconds. He won the event but also became the first swimmer this season to have a sub-46 second mark.
In the relay event, Ryan swam a 41.72 split as the Big Ten’s “A” team topped the “B” team. Ryan’s team finished in 2:50.81.
Ultimately, the USA team won the unique two-day meet 349-247.
