What to watch for in WPIAL sports on June 9, 2026: North Allegheny, Butler set for boys volleyball rematch
Welcome to Semifinals Tuesday in the PIAA boys volleyball and lacrosse playoffs.
There are only two WPIAL boys volleyball teams remaining heading into the state semifinals and they will meet in a rematch of the 2026 WPIAL Class 3A title match.
WPIAL champion North Allegheny (15-0) will square off against Butler (18-5) for the fourth time this season at Fox Chapel at 6 p.m.
Nearly three weeks ago, the two battled for district gold with the Tigers sweeping past the Golden Tornado in three games, 25-21, 25-13, 25-22.
This has been a very one-sided rivalry in recent years.
North Allegheny defeated Butler twice in the regular season by scores of 3-0 and twice last spring in three games each.
Two years ago, the Tigers won both matches in the regular season and swept past the Golden Tornado in the 2024 Class 3A semifinals, 3-0.
North Allegheny has won nine straight matches in this series.
The last time Butler was victorious against NA was in March of 2023, 3-1.
In fact, that was the first and only time the Golden Tornado beat the Tigers.
In the other 3A semifinals match Tuesday, Cumberland Valley (17-5) will take on Landisville Hempfield (18-1) at Hershey at 7 p.m.
The two PIAA Class 2A semifinals feature Meadville (19-0) vs. Brandywine Heights (20-2) at Bald Eagle at 5 p.m. and York Suburban (21-0) vs. Manheim Central (16-5) at Hershey at 5 p.m.
Mars madness
Only one lacrosse program from the WPIAL has played for a PIAA championship.
Now, the Mars boys are one win away from reaching the 2A state title match for the fifth time in six years.
Following a 1-6 quarterfinals showing by WPIAL teams, the Fightin' Planets once again are carrying the banner for District 7 heading into the final four.
WPIAL winner Mars (17-4) will battle District 3 champion Lampeter-Strasburg (22-2) at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mifflin County.
Mars won four straight state semifinals from 2021-2024.
Last spring, the Fightin' Planets were ousted in the quarterfinals by Allentown Central Catholic, 15-10.
In the other 2A boys semifinal, Twin Valley (18-3) from District 3 will take on District 1 champion Penncrest (16-7) at West Chester Henderson at 7 p.m.
Here are the other boys and girls lacrosse state semifinals matches set for Tuesday.
