Jones takes top singles spot in State College Invitational

STATE COLLEGE — State College’s Corinne Jones won the No. 1 girls’ tennis singles flight Saturday in the four-team State College Invitational.

Jones defeated Nicki Wolny of Mercersburg Academy 6-4, 6-4 in the finals after knocking off Downingtown West’s Steph Campbell in the semifinals.

Mercersburg Academy won the team title with State College finishing second.

The State College doubles’ teams of Caitie Hutton-Maria DiMuccio, Becca Rountree-Kate Carpenter and Laura Jung-Cara Rangaswamy each won their semifinal matches but the finals were not completed due to rain.

Mount Lebanon tops Little Lions

PITTSBURGH — Mount Lebanon earned its seventh straight shutout Saturday as the Blue Devils earned a 2-0 victory over State College.

Zach Bateer and Kevin Davis each scored for Mount Lebanon (7-0).

“We were a little flat today,” said State College coach John Marsden. “I thought conditions didn’t help us today. Mount Lebanon did a great job and we didn’t play our game.”

The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 22-0 to start the season.

BEA falls to Indian Valley

WINGATE — Indian Valley took a two-goal lead midway through the second half on its way to a 3-1 decision over Bald Eagle Area on Saturday.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on Korene Lichtenwaler’s goal. Neither team would score again until Indian Valley’s Bre Shugarts tallied an unassisted goal in the 60th minute, followed by Erin Bishop’s goal with under three minutes left in the game. Taylor Parsons scored for BEA (1-3) on a penalty kick with a minute remaining.

“Megan (Ebeling) played a real tough game as keeper for us,” said BEA coach Harvey Cunningham. “We stepped up and we’re finally playing some soccer. It was probably the best game we’ve played in quite a while.”
