Campus corner: Taylor receives prestigious Dal Canton Award at Cal

Bald Eagle Area graduate Justin Taylor was honored by the California University of Pa. over the weekend when he was named the recipient of the fifth annual Bruce Dal Canton Award. Dal Canton, a California graduate who pitched for several major league teams including the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves, passed away in 2008 from esophageal cancer.

The award recognizes the Vulcan player who exemplifies greatness of character. Taylor is 7-2 with a 3.81 ERA. In 56 2/3 innings, he has allowed 57 hits, 26 runs, 24 earned, walked 12 and struck out 36. He threw six complete games and recorded four shutouts. A sophomore, he has a career record of 11-4 and an ERA in 3.67.

Last week Taylor was named to the Capital One All-Academic team and is eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America team.

California is 33-16.


Scott Glass (State College, Bucknell) has a .220 average with nine runs, 13 hits, a double and five RBIs. Bucknell is 16-31 and in the Patriot League playoffs.

Matt Fisher (Bellefonte, Mansfield) finished the season hitting .275 with 26 runs scored, 36 hits, seven doubles, four homers and 24 RBIs. Mansfield finished at 12-26.

Seth Tressler (Bellefonte, Mansfield) hit .297 for the season with 38 runs scored, 49 hits, 11 doubles and a team-high 36 RBIs.

A.J. Robinson (BEA, California, Pa.) is hitting .252 with 23 runs scored, 36 hits, nine doubles, a triple, two homers and 33 RBIs. Cal is 31-19.

Brandon Myers (Philipsburg-Osceola, Slippery Rock) has a .312 average with 19 runs scored, 39 hits, seven doubles, two homers and 19 RBIs. Slippery Rock is 31-19.

Matt Curtis (P-O, Slippery Rock) is hitting .229 with 17 runs scored, 24 hits, a double and six RBIs.

Luke Curtis (P-O, Pitt) is 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA. In 19 2/3 innings, he has allowed 24 hits and 15 runs, 10 earned, while walking five and striking out 17. Pitt is 36-11 and in the Big East playoffs.

Drew Bryan (P-O, VMI) is hitting .260 with 23 runs scored, 39 hits, seven doubles, two triples and 19 RBIs. VMI is 19-30.

Austin Mock (State College, Indiana, Pa.) hit .299 with 13 runs scored, 35 hits, 10 doubles, three homers and 22 RBIs. IUP finished with a 27-23 record.

Clint Hicks (State College, PSU-Harrisburg) is 6-2 with a 4.18 ERA. He has allowed 75 hits, 33 runs, 26 earned, eight walks and 31 strikeouts. Harrisburg is 26-14 and headed to the NCAA Division III playoffs after winning its first NEAC title.

Brandon Auman (State College, PSU-Altoona) finished with a 5.40 ERA and a 1-1 record. In 16.2 innings he gave u p 22 hits and 14 runs, 10 earned, while walking 10 and striking out 13. Altoona finished with a 13-28 record.

Colin Muthler (State College, PSU-Altoona) hit .154 with two hits and an RBIs.

Trey Nicosia (State College, Wagner) has a .333 average with two runs scored, six hits and four RBIs. Wagner is 23-24.

Shane Regel (State College, Allegheny) is hitting .091 with a run scored, a hit and an RBIs. Allegheny is 24-14.

Matt Fry (State College, Washington & Jefferson) is hitting .207 with three runs scored, six hits, two doubles and six RBIs. W&J is 27-11.

Parker Watson (P-O, Lock Haven) finished his freshman year at 3-6 with a 5.13 ERA. In 52 2/3 innings, he allowed 64 hits and 38 runs, 30 earned, while walking 29 and striking out 26. Lock Haven closed with a 16-28 record.

Mike Marcinko (P-O, Shippensburg) hit .343 with 31 runs scored, 49 hits, four doubles, a triple, a homer and 17 RBIs. Shippensburg is 28-20.

Michael Finlan (State College, Marietta College) is 4-0 with a 1.74 ERA. In 41 1/3 innings, he has allowed 35 hits, 10 runs, eight of them earned, walked six and struck out 18. Marietta is 28-10.

Kerry Meyers (State College, PSU-Wilkes Barre) led the team in hitting with a .391 average. He scored nine runs, had 25 hits, two doubles, a triple and eight RBIs. Wilkes-Barre finished with a 3-16-1 record.


Clarissa Keller (Penns Valley, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .354 with 26 runs, 35 hits, seven doubles and 12 RBIs. Altoona won its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title when it beat Pitt-Bradford 8-1 on Sunday. PSU-Altoona (27-10) will face top-seeded Salisbury in the Salem Regional on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Lily Glunt (BEA, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .309 with 17 runs, 30 hits, three doubles and three homers. She has driven in 20 runs.

Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .362 with 26 runs, a team-high 42 hits, three doubles and 16 RBIs.

Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) has a .293 average with 15 runs, 22 hits, three doubles, four homers and 21 RBIs.

Kelly Chambers (BEA, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .373 and has scored a team-high 34 runs, is second with 41 hits and leads the team with 10 doubles, eight homers and 28 RBIs. She also has a triple.

Cassondra Ross (BEA, PSU-Altoona) has a .231 average with a run scored, six hits, two doubles and five RBIs. In the circle she is 4-1 with a 3.21 ERA. In 24 innings, she has given up 26 hits and 14 runs, 11 earned, while walking four and striking out 11.

Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) has a team-high .375 average with nine runs scored, 12 hits, four doubles, two homers and nine RBIs. In the circle, she is 9-4 with a 1.88 ERA. In 78 1/3 innings she has allowed 56 hits and 26 runs, 21 earned while walking 22 and striking out 96.

Erica Pooler (Bellefonte, Lock Haven) has a .235 average with four hits and three RBIs. Lock Haven is 28-14 and has received an NCAA a playoff bid.

Jennifer Ashcraft (State College, Juniata) hit .194 with three runs scored, six hits, two doubles and three RBIs. Juniata is 11-18.

Shelby Kline (State College, Mt. Aloysius) compiled a 7-3 record with a 3.53 ERA. In 88.2 innings she allowed 93 hits and 51 runs, 35 earned, while walking 12 and striking out 47.

Elle Hart (State College, Mt. Aloysius) hit .364with 39 runs scored, 48 hits, seven doubles, four triples and 15 RBIs. Mt. Aloysius is 26-13.

Tessa Deardorff (Penns Valley, Lebanon Valley) has a .376 average with 30 runs scored, 50 hits, three doubles and 10 RBIs. She is 19-for-19 in stolen bases. Lebanon Valley is 31-5-1.

Katie Deardorff (Penns Valley, Lebanon Valley) is hitting .358 with 25 runs scored, 43 hits, three doubles, a triple and 17 RBIs. She has stolen 24 basses in 28 tries.

Morgan Coble (P-O, Shenandoah) is hitting .306 with 27 run scored, 48 hits, nine doubles, a triple, three homers and 35 RBIs. She has eight stolen bases. Shenandoah is 26-18.

Chelsea Rex (P-O, St. Francis) finished with a 6-9 record and a 4.31 ERA. In 115 1/3 innings, she gave up 134 hits and 92 runs, 71 earned, while walking 45 and striking out 72. At the plate, she hit .242 with six runs s cored, 28 hits, four doubles, a triple, two homers and 18 RBIs.

Taylor Parsons (BEA, St. Francis) finished the year with a .301 average. She scored 29 runs and had 50 hits including 10 doubles, a triple and a homer. She drove in 17 runs and stole 20- bases in 25 tries, the second-highest total in team history. St. Francis closed the season with a 25-30 record.

Hannah Cooper (Bellefonte, Central Connecticut State) is hitting .252 with six runs scored, 28 hits, four doubles, a triple, two homers and 18 RBIs. Central Connecticut State is 32-13 and in the Northeast Conference playoffs.

Track & field

Brice Beals (BEA, Lock Haven) was 21st in the shot put with a heave of 37 feet, 3 1/4 inches and 10th in the hammer with a 155-9 effort at the Lock Haven Qualifier.

Nate Sweeley (Penns V alley, Lock Haven) was seventh in the 200 with a time of 22.60 seconds in the LHU Qualifier.

Corey King (Penns Valley, Lock Haven) was 15th in the 100 in 11.51, ran the leadoff leg of the 4x100 relay which posted a time of 42.96 and ws 18th in the 200 in 23.31.

Jessica Simcisko (BEA, Kutztown) threw the javelin 30-32 meters and threw the hammer 99-5 3/4, but did not place in the LHU Qualifier.


Andy Jameson (State College, Eastern) finished the season with 10 goals and six assists as Eastern finished with a 15-2 record.
