Campus Corner: State College graduate McLaughlin helps Navy sprint team to win

Thanks to senior defensive back Alec McLaughlin, Navy’s sprint football team defeated Franklin Pierce 23-9 in its season opener Saturday.

McLaughlin, a State College graduate and returning starter in the secondary, intercepted a pair of passes in Navy’s win, returning the second one to the Franklin Pierce 3-yard line to set up the clinching touchdown. He returned the interceptions a total of 32 yards and also had two solo tackles in the victory.


Colton Myers (State College, Juniata) has four receptions for a total of 61 yards.

Michael John (Philipsburg-Osceola, Juniata) has 104 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and two receptions for 36 yards. Juniata is off to a 2-0 start.

Kurt Walker (P-O, Shippensburg) has seven solo tackles and three assists. Shippensburg is 1-1.

Colby Way (State College, Buffalo) has seven solo stops and six assists. He has three tackles for loss for minus-13 yards and a sack for minus-7 yards. Buffalo is 1-2 after beating Stony Brook 26-23 in five overtimes.

Alex Boumerhi (P-O, Lock Haven) has a field goal and five extra points in six attempts for the Bald Eagles, who are 1-1.

Bernard Smack (State College, Lock Haven) has one reception for 18 yards and has returned two kickoffs 60 yards.

Zach Czap (P-O, Lycoming) has made 4 of 5 extra points. He has not attempted a field goal to date. He is also averaging 39.8 yards on 13 punts and has averaged 52 yards on seven kickoffs. Lycoming is 1-1.

Sam Rodgers (State College, Syracuse) continues to start as long snapper for the Orange (1-2).

Jon Cox (State College, Franklin & Marshall) has three solo tackles and an assist at nose guard. F&M is 1-1.

Matt Mazzara (State College, St. Francis) is a backup quarterback who has yet to see playing time for the Red Flash.

Josh Weakland (State College, Slippery Rock) is a redshirt freshman reserve quarterback who has yet to see action for the Rock. Slippery Rock is 2-0.


Andy Blunk (State College, Juniata) has two goals and an assist. Juniata is 5-0-1.

Anthony Glossner (Penns Valley, Juniata) has taken one shot in five games.

Reece Fisher (State College, Juniata) has played two games on defense.

Ally Reid (State College, Franklin & Marshall) has two assists to date. F&M is 3-1-1.

David Trunzo (State College, St. Francis) has a goal and has taken three shots. SFU is 4-1-1.

Katelyn Gill (State College, Alvernia) starts on defense and is a captain for Alvernia.

Kelsey Gill (State College, Alvernia) has scored three goals and is a team captain. Alvernia is 5-1.

Chloe Schmidt (State College, Illinois) finished 53rd with a time of 23:55.7 in the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue over the weekend where the Illini placed fourth.

Jason Doll (State College, Delaware Valley) ran a 32:01.78 in the Road Runner Invitational over the weekend.

Paul Crowe (State College, Susquehanna) placed ninth in the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Challenge in 20:23.41.

John Crowe (State College, Susquehanna) finished sixth in 20:12.22 as Susquehanna won the event, placing seven runners in the top 15.
