Kayaking: Local paddlers shine in Bellefonte Slalom

Ethan Van Horn won all three classes that he entered at the Bellefonte Slalom.

Van Horn, of Bellefonte, won the men’s kayak, singles canoe, and open boat singles canoe. Winning two classes were Jon Nelson (State College), Evy Van Horn (Bellefonte), Sarah Mosier (State College), and Paul Kremer (State College).

Ethan Van Horn won the AB kayak class in 98 seconds. Cadet paddler Alden Henrie (Snow Shoe) was second with a 111-second run. Van Horn (117) edged Henrie (125) in the singles canoe class. Van Horn (200) topped Henrie (202) in the open canoe class

Nelson won both his classes --- kayak masters (116) and kayak rec boat (120). Dave Kurtz (127) was second in the masters while Bob Horlacher (State College) took fifth place (158).

Evy Van Horn (112) won the women’s kayak U-16 over Sarah Mosier (127). The two then teamed to win the women’s doubles canoe (167). Mosier also won the women’s singles canoe class (133).

Kremer won the masters’ singles canoe class (138) and teamed with his son Solihcan to win the open boat doubles canoe class (310).

Rylin Pacella (Bellefonte) took the U-12 kayak class (144) over Milesburg’s Jacob Saldana (192) and Zach Grant (195).

Bellefonte’s Carson McChesney (258) won the U-12 novice kayak class over his brother, Andrew (329).

Michaela Brungart (247) won the women’s’ novice class.

Linus Kaye (State College) had a third, while Pleasant Gap’s Joe Eirmann (159) in the kayak CD class.

Port Matilda’s Lee DeWolski (133) was second in the women’s kayak masters and Michelle Van Horn (154) was third.

In the women’s rec boat class, State College’s Amy Nelson (147) won, while State College’s Ann Marie Daniel (169) was third.

Ethan Van Horn, Evy Van Horn, and Sarah Mosier won the team crown (141).

Penn Cup Turkey honors

Local Centre County paddlers won all the top Penn Cup Turkey awards for 2013.

Results for each of the six races in the series were used to determine the winners.

Alden Henrie, 13, of Snow Shoe took the gold Turkey Award in men’s kayak with the minimum three points.

Nikaelin Pacella, 15, of Bellefonte won in women’s kayak with three points. Michelle Van Horn of Bellefonte took the silver.

Chauncey Blakeslee, 15, of Bellefonte won in men’s canoe with three points

Evy Van horn, 16, of Bellefonte won in women’s canoe with three points.

Jon Nelson of State College captured the men’s kayak recreation class. State College’s

Amy Nelson won women’s kayak, recreation class.
