Ed Ruth will not start the dual-meet season with the rest of the Penn State wrestling team.
Ruth will stay home as the three-time defending Big Ten and NCAA champions travel for duals against Rider and Lehigh this weekend after Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said Ruth is indefinitely suspended for violating team rules.
“Ed Ruth broke team rules (Tuesday). He will not be wrestling this weekend. I’m not going to comment on that any more than that,” Sanderson said. “We’re going to figure out what we’re going to do but definitely for this weekend.”
A two-time NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy runner-up, Ruth has not lost a match since March 18, 2011. He’s won Big Ten championships at 174 pounds twice and 184 pounds. He won back-to-back NCAA titles at 174 and 184 pounds the last two years and has been a big part in Penn State’s three-straight NCAA title wins as he’s 16-1 overall in the NCAA tournament.

Sophomore James Frascella could get the nod in Ruth’s absence, Sanderson said. Frascella went 3-2 over the weekend at the Binghamton Open before he lost to Ruth in the semifinals.
